Dawki's famous transparent river is the Umngot, and Shnongpdeng village a few kilometres upstream is where most of the good riverside stays sit, Betelnut Resort among the longest-running. It's about 82 km and 2.5 to 3 hours from Shillong by road, and the river runs clearest from November to February once the monsoon silt has settled — visit in July and the same water is opaque and brown. Rooms here are deliberately simple: no air conditioning, just ceiling fans and coolers, split between deluxe rooms with king beds, twin rooms, and riverside camping tents pitched right against the boulders. This is honestly the best organised stay in the immediate area rather than a luxury property by any conventional measure, and it should be booked for the setting and the activities — kayaking, boating, cliff jumping — not for room finishes. It suits adventurous families and river-focused travellers who don't need turndown service to enjoy a night by clear water.
